Steve & April's Big Adventure

In August 2006 we began our new life as people without a home, without jobs and without a schedule. We are traveling around the United States in our 1965 Airstream travel trailer.

more news from Ely

The big adventure of the week is that we sunk/swamped the SuzyQ, but Steve is so smart that it actually runs better now!! We have been staying at High Island this week to practice being still and relaxing. We have a long list of books we've read since we got here on the 9th! Here are a few more pictures. . .

Update from Burntside Lake

HIGH ISLAND,
Burntside Lake,
Ely, MN

We have arrived at High Island and are having a wonderful time. We received a warm welcome by cousins Tish, Karen and Nate and they educated and entertained us for 4 days.

This island was purchased by my great-grandfather, Colonel AB Conard, in 1935. The cabin was designed by my great-aunt Janice, an architectural student. It was completed after the war and has been enjoyed by the whole family every year since then.

Right now, while the rest of you are in a heat wave, we are enjoying 75 degree weather with a wonderful breeze. This is a beautiful place.

Our first morning at Lake Superior

Hello from Michigan!

We are in the Western Upper Peninsula of Michigan in Houghton and camping at McLain State Park in Hancock. Here is our recent itinerary:
Kokomo, Indiana--thanks to the Akers for their hospitality!
Mackinaw City, Michigan--camping at Tee Pee Campground
Mackinac Island by ferry--very fun and different!
Paradise, MI and Tahquamenon Falls with the Soodan family--SUPER FUN
Houghton and Hancock, MI--camping next to the beach of Lake Superior--this view is amazing.

Some of you will not be surprised to hear that we are visualizing ourselves living in every place we visit, but we will not take any action toward moving anywhere any time soon.

We will head to Ely, MN tomorrow and I don't know when I'll get to do more updating. Email me if you want the link to ALL the pictures, for most of you this sampling will probably be adequate.

On The Road

We're in Kokomo, IN at John and Janet Akers' house. We did not spend the first night of the trip in the Airstream because we had a better offer in their guest room. They even stayed up until 2AM to get us settled. We learned a few things yesterday, the first is "don't leave at 4:30 PM," and that it will definitely take longer than we think to get from point a to point b.

Special Thanks

I just want to say thanks again to the following people who helped us get to this point:

Corie Simpson at Investor's Trust Mortgage for storing the Airstream and having the party,
Leslie Taylor for sharing her seamstress talents on the sofa and the curtains,
Garnett Rush for giving us a home for 2 months,
Steve's dad, Gary Mallory, for giving us a home with Katie for 3 months,
Steve's aunt and uncle, Jim and Annette Sloan, for giving us a home with Katie for 3 months,
Family Campers in Lebanon for working so hard to ensure our safety on the road, and
Rose Tire company in Lebanon for helping us actually get out of town on the 2nd.

Especially we want to thank my cousin Patti Jones and Uncle Jim Hillin for giving us the opportunity to resurrect my Uncle Bill's 1965 Airstream for this big adventure.

Certainly there are a lot of others who have helped and encouraged us, but I can't list everyone individually.
